Lang Lang Pro Am

2009 Origin Energy Pro Am
Thursday 12th February

The Wrap Up...

The 2009 Origin Energy Pro Am saw its biggest field in years with 220 players filling the field. 82 of Victoria's Leading Tour Professionals were fighting for a purse of $10,000.

The morning saw perfect scoring conditions with very little breeze and mild conditions. Nigel Stivala lead the charge with a fine score of 2 under par 68. Josh Younger and Leighton Lyle also managed to break par with a 1 under 69. Round of the morning however went to Shane Gurnett, off a handicap of 5 at Commonwealth Golf Club he managed to beat all but 1 of the professionals in the morning shooting 41 pts (Gross 69) to take out A grade and picking up a Titliest Stand Bag.

The afternoon saw a strong wind develop which made the course play alot tougher than the morning. The wind was that strong that the 368m first hole was playing straight downwind and was being driven by some golf professionals. This made the holes playing into and across the wind very tricky. There was one professional however who blew the field away. Steve Jones from Victoria blitzed the field with a 6 under (64). Steve reportedly left his driver in the bag and managed to keep his ball safely in play all day and from there hit some superb iron shots and holed some great putts.

Last years winner Michael Foote must've thought he was in with a real show of defending his title with a very fine 3 under (67) in the tough afternoon conditions. It was the same score that he had shot to win the previous year but unforetunately for him, he had to settle for 2nd place this year. Lang Lang's Colin Casey managed to win the A Grade trophy with a fine 39 points off a handicap of 5 (Gross 72) to win a Titliest D2 Driver valued at over $700.

This years Pro Am saw the inclusion of the PreFab Stairs Shootout on the 9th hole at the conclusion of the days play. Each professional had 2 shots from the 9th tee with the nearest to the pin winning $500 cash. Michael Curtain who recently secured his European Tour Card managed to hit two fine shots from 136 metres with his closest being only 20cm away.
