| History of the Lang Lang Golf Club |

Lang Lang Golf Club dates back to the 1920's when it was a 9 hole course played on land made available by various farmers in the region. As farms changed hands then the course would be forced to shut.
This transient lifestyle encouraged members to try and locate a site that would provide stability and allow for improvements to the standard of course presentation.
In the early 1960's suitable Crown land was found near Nyora and a leasing agreement entered into between the Golf Club and the Government.
The soil was loose and sandy which is perfect golf country and in 1963 former Australian Open Golf Champion, George Naismith offered his services without charge to design a course that would stand the test of time.
Naismith's original hand drawn sketch of the course he planned still hangs proudly in the clubhouse.
With the planning afoot the members set about felling trees, removing stumps, digging bunkers, shifting soil for greens, pulling weeds and sewing seed to create fairways. This was done with volunteer labour from members and member's friends. In this day and age it is hard to imagine such community spirit and involvement in order to achieve their goal. |

We spoke with founding member Noel Courtney (Koo Wee Rup) who recalled the early days;
"We had to carry an onion bag under our golf buggy and that as you walked the fairways you were expected to fill the bag with weeds. Also that early morning members would adopt a bunker and they would weed and rake the bunker before the commencement of the days play.
Everyone pulled together to make sure the course would always be on the improve. In those days there was never a divot left unrepaired, you carried a jam tin full of sand and always repaired your divots.
I can remember fellows giving up their weekends, trucks and tractors to help out and they didn't even play golf! That's the way it was then….."
